New Three-Hand Watches That Impress Discerning Watch Lovers

Watches & Wonders 2026 reminds collectors that restraint is horology’s hardest act.

By Alvin Wong 20 October 2026 4 min read

There is nothing to add or subtract from the world’s best three-hand watches. An hour hand, a minute hand, a small seconds hand—and perhaps a small date display. Beyond these features, there is nothing else competing for your attention.

It is the format every collector eventually returns to. Not because it demands less of a watchmaking house. Rather, it is the opposite: there is nowhere for the most rudimentary and vital elements of a watch to hide.

This year, three creations stand out, each with a unique interpretation of what thinness, tradition, and restraint mean.

Chopard L.U.C 1860, Ref. 168860-3005

Chopard built this watch to mark 30 years of its Fleurier manufacture, and this commemorative Chopard L.U.C 1860 celebrates that milestone with subtle power. Framed within a 36.5mm Lucent Steel case, the hand-guilloché Areuse Blue dial, crafted on a vintage lathe, takes its colour from the river that runs past the workshop.

Inside sits the in-house L.U.C Calibre 96.40-L. Thought measuring just 3.30mm thick, the movement features twin stacked barrels that delivers up to 65 hours of power reserve. The calibre carries both COSC chronometer certification and the Poinçon de Genève, a pairing that attests to the watch’s high mechanical and aesthetic standards.

Patek Philippe Calatrava Ref. 5227G-015

Quintessence of timeless elegance, Calatrava Reference 5227 is destined to enchant purists. Image from Patek Philippe

Patek Philippe’s new Calatrava Ref. 5227G-015 exemplifies beauty in simplicity. The 39mm white gold watch is spare at first glance, but brims with lovely details and mechanical gravitas. The incurved lugs, baton markers, sharp faceted dauphine hands accentuate the watch’s classical inclinations. Meanwhile the rose-gilt opaline dial adds a measure of contemporary edge.

Flip the watch over an one finds an “Officer”-style sapphire case back with a hinged dust cover that reveals the finely decorated automatic caliber 26-330 S C, a successor to the workhorse calibre 324 equipped with features such as hacking-seconds for more accurate time-setting and a designed uni-directional winding system to optimise power efficiency.

Vacheron Constantin Overseas Self-Winding Ultra-Thin

Vacheron Constantin hails the Calibre 2550 that powers the new Overseas Self-Winding Ultra-Thin as a new chapter in the brand’s storied mechanical legacy. The 2.4mm-thin movement took seven years of development and answers a genuine engineering problem: how to deliver an 80-hour power reserve without adding bulk.

The pairing of platinum with a salmon-coloured dial harks back to historical models from the 1940s. Image from Vacheron Constantin

The solution? A micro-rotor paired with a suspended double barrel and a compact single-level gear train, which allowed Vacheron Constantin’s engineers to eliminate a ratchet altogether. The result is the thinnest Overseas ever made, housed in a hardened and scratch-resistant 39.5mm platinum case that as practical as it is prestigious.

A salmon-lacquered, sunburst dial enlivens the look with a contemporary touch. Limited to 255 pieces, it is a reminder that ultra-thin watchmaking is not an aesthetic exercise but also a  mechanical one.
